Activities/8th Grade
Eighth grade
students
at E. B. Stanley Middle School will visit the Washington County
Technical
School during the spring of the school year. The students will
learn
about various vocational careers by experiencing the hands-on
exploratory
labs. The areas they will visit include these Career &
Technical Education Classes: Auto
Body Repair I & II - 36 Weeks, Basic Carpentry - 36 Weeks,
Bricklayer - 36 Weeks,, Career Pathways Phase 2: Construction Skills -
36 Weeks, Computer Repair & Servicing 36 Weeks, Cosmetology I
- 36 Weeks, Emergency Medical Technician I & II - 36 Weeks,
Technology Fundamentals - 36 Weeks, Introduction to Health and Medical
Sciences - 18 Weeks, Medical Terminology - 18 Weeks.
This visit will be
conducted
prior to high school scheduling so that some of these students could
decide
to choose to attend WCTS next year for one-half day. They will
take
their math there as well. The college bound students benefit from
the visit by being better prepared to refine their choices and
examine
how this fits with their objectives. All students will be given
valuable
materials for career decision-making that include a large booklet
entitled Mid-Atlantic Guide to Information on Careers-Prepare
Now.

Note to
Parents
from Mrs. Harley
Sixth grade
students
will be trained to use the Career Planet Launch Pad Program. This is a
computer software program designed to help students begin to think
about
future career decisions. It also provides opportunities for
students
to see the connections of school subjects and important skills and
traits
to different careers. I use one session of their computer
exploratory
class to introduce this program to them. I have installed it on
each
of the sixth grade computers and in the library computer lab so it is
available
to students throughout the year.
Seventh
grade students
will complete an interest inventory during December. The
inventories
provide each student with scores according their areas of
interest.
The highest scores correlate with career areas that may suite them in
the
future. Each class will then use their inventories in a computer
lab session using the Virginia View web site www.vaview.vt.edu.
This is a very useful web site from the Virginia Tech campus for
parents
and students. I encourage parents to log on and have your child
show
you the different features of this web site.
It is never
to early
to start exploring the many options students have available to them in
the future. Linking what students are required to do
academically as well as social skills needed for the future helps them
to understand the importance of what they are doing each day both in
and
out of school. Life is full of learning opportunities for those
with
a desire to learn.
The Guidance
Department
has hard copies of the booklet Building A Solid Future:
Your
Middle
School Guidebook To College or you may access it online at http://www.schev.edu/Students/StudentPublications.asp
for
those who would like further information. This is an excellent
resource.
Please let us know if we can further assist you and your child in this
important area of planning.
